What is aromatherapy?
For those who don’t know it, aromatherapy seems ancient. Thinking that a vial with drops of plant extract can heal, sounds like something that has been done for ages. But that’s not the case at all. While plants and oils have been used medically for millennia, scientific research on the properties of essential oils is relatively recent, and it’s been growing fast.
And when I say that, I really mean it. A quick search for the terms “aromatherapy”, “essential oils” or “essential oil” on PubMed – a publicly available database of medical researches maintained by The United States National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health – yields over 20,000 results, with more being published each year.
And what are essential oils? They are highly concentrated medicinal plant extracts, with hundreds of active agents, frequently used in perfumery and cooking. But when it comes to aromatherapy, they’re used to deal with several diseases. They also promote a holistic view of health, including emotional and beauty care. And to make things better, it smells really good too.
What does aromatherapy have to do with interior design?
Quite a lot, actually. Like elements of a well-decorated home, each essential oil is made of different molecules, with different purposes. And like a well-planned room, each oil has its own purpose.
You wouldn’t be comfortable sleeping in a noisy bedroom, with no ventilation, a small bed, a hard mattress, and no storage space, would you? That’s why you don’t use any room in your house as a bedroom. In that same vein, you wouldn’t want to use a stimulant essential oil, like cinnamon or rosemary in your bedroom, to keep you up at night.
The scent you want in each room comes down to understanding what they do for you and your personal taste. I can start by giving you some ideas of different oils to use in different spaces of your home.
Bedroom
A bedroom is usually the place where you go to relax, sleep, and, generally, get comfortable. That’s why Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) oil is perfect. Its sweet and floral molecules allow you to have a restful sleep. Just put one drop on your home decor pillow, as a result, you’ll enjoy your own springtime dream.
If you want to bring a different mood to your bedroom and spice things up, the ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) flower essential oil can do the trick. The oil obtained from the petals of this tropical flower is known to bring heat to any relationship.
Other aromas for your bedroom: bergamot (Citrus bergamia), chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), and lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus).

Home office
This past year, more than ever, made a lot of us realize the importance of having a proper home office setup. And with working from home or in a hybrid environment becoming a rising trend, it seems that investing in a dedicated work and study space is also going to be a necessity in most places. But this also comes with its own set of challenges, like more distractions.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is the ultimate essential oil for those who need focus. You can use a few drops in an air diffuser and it’ll help you with any productivity issues – and make your office smell fresh and herbal.
Other aromas for your home office: peppermint (Mentha piperita), eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus globulus), and lime (Citrus aurantifolia).
Living room
When your friends come over, or when you want to spend time with your family, the living room is the perfect place to be. Sitting on the couch to watch a nice movie, playing games, or just having some drinks, is where you keep the mood high and the conversation flowing.
A few drops of grapefruit essential oil (Citrus aurantium), with its citric, tropical aroma, will guarantee that you feel energized and focus the vital energy of your home in this room.
Other aromas for your living room: marjoram (Origanum majorana), lemon (Citrus limon), Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana), and Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens).
There are many other essential oils you can use to achieve different moods at home. But, with these tips, you can definitely transform your home decor.
